The former governor of Anambra State quit his post at First Bank of Nigeria to work as an accountant for Chevron Oil Nigeria Plc, where he eventually rose to the position of Chief Internal Auditor.
He participated in the 1989 audit of the Texaco Refinery in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Following the election of Charles Chukwuma Soludo as Obiano’s replacement in November 2021, rumors that Obiano had been put on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) watchlist surfaced.
Although the EFCC did not provide an explanation for including Obiano on their blacklist, rumors regarding prospective investigations into allegations of corruption prompted the media to look into the administration of Obiano’s finances.
On November 30, 2021, the Peoples Gazette published an exclusive on bank records that revealed Willie Obiano had taken over $4 billion without giving a reason from many Anambra security vote allocation accounts on March 29, 2017.
A few hours after he ceded office on March 17, 2022, he was detained by the EFCC at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The reason for the arrest has not yet been disclosed, but according to EFCC spokesperson Wilson Uwajaren, it has to do with Obiano’s inclusion on the watchlist and his effort to exit the country.
