Poppy spent four years in a narrowboat in Ladbroke Grove, London, but they have since moved and now live in a house in Devon. In a Q&A on Instagram, he said living in a boathouse offered him an incredible lesson in understanding resources.
“It was a really amazing lesson in understanding resources. On the boat, you have a water tank, solar panels, and a composting toilet or a toilet that holds the waste and then you have to empty it, you don’t have a council that can come and empties your bins so it’s all a bit more extreme. You have an idea of how much electricity it really takes to run your fridge, and if you use too many appliances, the battery either drains and you have to wait for it to charge again, or the battery gets damaged and you have to pay a lot of money to replace it. I think when you live in a house, you forget how precious these things are and you start to take them for granted.”
He also did an interview with The Guardian. He said life on a ship “is like a miniature version of life on a planet.”
