Marlo Thomas was born on November 21, 1937, in Deerfield, Michigan to actor Danny Thomas and Betty Cox. Her father was an established star during the 1950s and 1960s. She was raised with her brother Tony and sister Terre in Beverly Hills, California. In 1959, she graduated from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature.
Film and Television Career
After leaving college in 1959, Thomas found minor success with commercial appearances before being cast in her first television series. In 1961, she starred in The Dawn Patrol, a comedy about three Marine Corps officers. This was followed by her central role in That Girl from 1966 to 1971 which become one of the most popular sitcoms of that era. Her big screen career began with roles in films such as 1975’s Jory, for which Thomas earned an Emmy Award nomination and 1977’s rustic drama Up the Sandbox.
Move Into Theater
After appearing in various films and television shows, Marlo Thomas moved into the realm of live theater. She performed in major productions such as The Shadow Box (1977-1978) and Social Security (1986) at the National Arts Center Theater. Her performances earned her a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Play for Social Security.
Later Work, Awards, and Philanthropic Efforts
Thomas’s later work includes the show Boys, Girls, and a world in between, which is loosely based on her memoir. She has also continued to be involved in philanthropic efforts, most notably founding The Learning Redefined Foundation in 1995. This organization works with organizations around the world to help promote girls’ education, human trafficking prevention, and ending poverty. Marlo Thomas has won numerous awards for her long-time commitment to public service, which includes four Emmys and eleven honorary doctorate degrees from universities across America.
