Leslie Calvin “Les” Brown (born February 17, 1945) is an American politician and motivational speaker. He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1977 to 1981. Brown was born with his twin brother Wesley in Liberty City, a low-income neighborhood in Miami, Florida.
Mamie Brown, a 38-year-old single woman who worked as a cafeteria worker and housekeeper, adopted him. Brown claims he was labeled “educable mentally retarded” in elementary school, which hurt his self-esteem and confidence.
According to many of Brown’s speeches, he repeatedly did not break into public radio. He was only hired full-time after DJ mistakes on air in the morning. After being fired from the radio station, he ran for and was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives. After leaving the Ohio State Legislature, he switched to television and became an anchor for PBS.
