Born and raised in Niagara Falls, Ontario, he played junior hockey for the N.F. Flyers. In 1965, Turk led his team to the Memorial Cup, a symbol of youth hockey supremacy in Canada, and in 1967 he received the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy as the OHL’s top scorer.
Instinctively, Derek has always understood the value of the “big stage”. In 1966, in the midst of a basement season, Boston Bruins management decided to stage a game at the Boston Garden between the Niagara Falls Flyers led by Sanderson and the Oshawa Generals led by Bobby Orr to showcase their rising talent. Winning that night was not on Sanderson’s agenda; Or to get into a fight. Scouts and fans have noticed. A year later, the two young superstars were Bruins teammates.
Calder Trophy, Stanley Cup and trouble
In 1967-68 he played for the Bruins, scoring 24 goals with 25 assists and winning the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year.
Although he played in a Hall of Famer lineup with Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Gerry Cheevers and Ed Westfall,
