Who owns Gujarat Titans IPL team?

The main topic of conversation ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League was the incorporation of the new Ahmedabad IPL team and the Lucknow franchise. It was the first time since 2011 that the league had 10 teams participating. So who is the owner of Gujarat Titans?

In October 2021, BCCI invited investors from around the world to participate in the auction for these two franchises. RPSG Group, who previously owned Rising Pune Supergiant, made a whopping offer of INR 7,090 crore to take over the Lucknow franchise, while the owners of the Gujarat team were foreign venture capital firm CVC Capital Partners.

Owner of Gujarat Titans – CVC Capital Partners

CVC Capital Partners, owners of Gujarat Titans, is a UK private equity and investment firm with over US$75 billion in assets. The foundations of CVC Capital Partners were laid by the well-known banking company Citicorp, which wanted to create an investment company. Although Citicorp’s venture capital investments began in 1968, CVC Capital Partners was incorporated as a separate entity in 1981.

Over the years it has become one of the largest investment firms in Europe and has also expanded its wings into Asia. Several big names are housed under the CVC group, including well-known IT security company Avast, luxury watchmaker Breitling SA, one of the UK’s leading car companies RAC and pet supplies chain.

They appeared determined to compete in the Indian Premier League when the BCCI opened the tenders and placed a bid of INR 5,625 crore to seal the deal. However, there was one major hurdle that had to be cleared before the Ahmedabad franchise could begin its early operations.

Tipico, a world-renowned sports betting and gaming organization, is a portfolio company of CVC Capital Partners. The objection was raised on social media primarily by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, who pointed out that one of the bidders has a large investment in a betting company, which would create a conflict of interest given the history of this tournament.

The private equity firm was given time by BCCI to issue a statement and later confirmed that Tipico is part of CVC Group’s European arm and will remain fully independent and separate from CVC’s Asian arm, which is investing in Gujarat Titans made. After a thorough examination, the BCCI considered their participation valid and announced the team name a few days before the auction.

The Story of the Titans of Gujarat

This is not the first time that the state of Gujarat has seen an IPL representation. However, the previously inducted team Gujarat Lions entered the game only as a substitute for two years when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended for two years. The franchise was based in Rajkot and is currently defunct.

As was the case with Deccan Chargers and Sunrisers Hyderabad, these two franchises will have no relation to each other and the data of Rajkot-based franchises will not be added to Gujarat Titans.
