Career

2018–present: Early career and viral success

Porter began rapping in January 2018 under the stage name Blueface Bleedem, in reference to his ties to the School Yard Crip gang. Returning to Los Angeles after quitting his college football career, he was invited to his friend Laudiano’s music studio to pick up a phone charger.

And after being challenged to rap to a beat, Porter began working and collaborating with Laudiano to release his first song, “Dead Locs” on Soundcloud.

In June 2018, he released his first full-length project, Famous Cryp. In September 2018, after the song and EP helped him build a local following in California, he released his second EP, Two Coccy, on Soundcloud and Spotify.

On October 8, 2018, Blueface released a video for his song “Respect My Crypn” through the WorldStarHipHop YouTube channel, and shortly after the song was posted on Twitter where it became a viral meme due to his flow lagging behind the beat and the intonation of his voice, with users comparing his voice to that of comic book character Courage The Cowardly Dog and Birdarang from Teen Titans Go!.

The popularity of the video drew attention to Blueface’s music, with her songs “Thotiana” and “Next Big Thing” gaining popularity. His popularity increased, even more, when he held a contest on his Instagram page that week regarding which high school he was to visit.

Pasadena High School ( California ) picked up a win over Santa Monica High School. The social media stunt brought new followers and attention to the rapper. In November 2018, Blueface was signed to Cash Money West subsidiary Cash Money Records and released clips of himself in the studio with Drake and Quavo on his page Instagram.

In December 2018, Blueface went viral again thanks to an acoustic video of Einer Bankz featuring his new song “Bleed It”. Blueface released the song two days later, including a video on Lyrical Lemonade’s YouTube channel directed by Cole Bennett, which garnered over 2 million views in just 24 hours.

On January 26, 2019, Blueface’s hit “Thotiana” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 75, becoming her first song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was later released as a single on the same day and a remix featuring YG was released along with a music video and subsequently, Cardi B. He then chained the hits Offset, the remix of Shotta Flow with NLE Choppa, and his single Daddy with Rich The Kid until becoming a current rap star.

On March 13, 2020, Blueface officially released its first studio album after pushing it back twice. The album bears a provocative name Find The Beat literally translated as “finding the rhythm” due to the offbeat style of the rapper.

Musical style

Blueface’s offbeat style and unique vocals have been compared to fellow California rappers E-40 and Suga Free, as well as Southern rappers, Juvenile and Silkk the Shocker. Blueface said he writes “in rhythm” and uses the instrumental as the basis for all of his songs.

On November 16, 2018, at around 8:30 p.m. local time, a man at a Chevron gas station approached Porter, who then attempted to rob him. Porter fired back at the man’s vehicle and was later arrested and charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle, a felony in the state of California. It was released on $50,000 bail on November 18. It also was also arrested in 2019 for possession of a firearm. [ref. necessary]
